About  Montalt to Maude Family 1066-1700
This site is here for many reasons. One of them is confusion. The reason for this confusion identifies with the calender rolls and registered information found. Some of the Calender roll items are affadavits rather than what is occuring at the time of recording.

The Montalt Family came from Normandy with William the Conqueror. Through the influence of the King who through the church and divine right, owned England and sought to dominate Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Willian is a descendant of the Danes. William is named the bastard son of Robert 1 of Normandy, by a laundress Arlette. He married Matilda of Flanders who is believed to be only 4 foot 10 inches in height. Together, they had a number of children, who intermarried with royalty in France, Europe and the English Anglosaxon. William managed his kingdom by allocating land tenure through a restricted number of Barons. These Barons related directly to the king. This land by tenure, is distributed unevenly thorughout England and Europe.

Eustace FitzNorman arrived in England in the train of Hugh Lupus D'Avrancches a cousin of King William. Hugh was the Baron of Chester. Hugh selected men in his train to assist him in ruling the north of England and the Eustace de Montalt was given large tracts of land in York and Wales.

The confusion commences here, as children, did not have the same surname as the father, and were quite often given the surname of the land that had been ceded to them. For example, Ralph de Montalt, Roger of Hawardene, Richard of Woodstock. People in general were named through their profession. William the roper, John the farmer. Therefore people could have as many as 6 aliases through position, land and title.

I am asking for your feedback with this tree, that I have here. Jane Maude is an ancestor, who married John Longley in Kent, England and begins the family tree. Her descendants immigrated to Australia. This tree looks bacward in time to her ancestors. I am sure there are some errors and I have included reference where possible. I believe that there are two families the De Monfort and De Montalt. The de Montfort are from France and the De Montalt are from Italy. I feel that these two trees have become mixed. What do you think?
